Northshore Hospital occupied a site on Holton Road in North Muskegon, in Muskegon County on the Lake Michigan shore. The facility was built in the 1920s as a tuberculosis sanatorium, part of the broad early-twentieth-century effort to isolate and treat TB patients in dedicated institutions, often in airy locations away from city centers.
As tuberculosis declined as a mass killer in the mid-twentieth century, the institution was repurposed and came to house mentally ill patients. Like many such facilities, it eventually faced funding shortfalls that forced its closure, after which the large brick building sat empty for many years.
During its abandonment the hospital became a magnet for urban explorers and thrill-seekers, its interior walls covered in graffiti and its basement gaining a particularly fearsome local reputation. The structure was demolished in the early 2000s, and today only a vacant, fenced lot marks the spot. The site remains one of the most frequently cited 'haunted' locations in the Muskegon area, sustained by both its institutional history and the stories of those who explored it before demolition.

While the building still stood, explorers described an oppressive atmosphere within its graffiti-covered walls, including readings scrawled on surfaces like 'the house of the dead' and 'I can see you.' Witnesses reported unexplained cold spots, disembodied noises and voices filling the empty halls, footsteps, and shadowy forms sweeping through rooms. The basement was consistently singled out as the most disturbing and energetic part of the structure.
Since the demolition, the lore has migrated to the vacant ground itself. People walking on or near the property at night have reported seeing white, floating shapes hovering over the lot and orbs of light moving across it, as well as hearing whispering and low moaning. These accounts are presented here as the local paranormal tradition attached to the site, reported by regional storytellers and ghost-lore outlets rather than confirmed as supernatural fact.

Trenton, MI
In the late 1800s, businessman Austin Church — a former owner of the Sibley Quarry and associated with the Arm & Hammer brand — built a riverside mansion in Trenton, Michigan. The Church family donated the property in 1943, and it was converted into Riverside Osteopathic Hospital in 1944. The hospital closed in 2002 and the building was undergoing demolition as of 2023.
Pontiac, MI
Opened in 1878 as the Eastern Michigan Asylum, the Pontiac institution was designed by Michigan State Capitol architect Elijah Myers. Renamed Pontiac State Hospital in 1911 and Clinton Valley Center in 1973, it peaked at about 3,100 patients in the 1950s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was closed in 1997 and demolished in 2000; a subdivision now occupies the site.
