Est. 1865 · Built around 1865, predating the 1887 platting of Willis · Served Willis (Augusta Township) as a coach stop, grainery, butcher shop, ice house, post office and general store · Restored in a general-store style in the mid-1980s
The building at 10256 Willis Road, in the Washtenaw County community of Willis (Augusta Township), was built around 1865, predating the 1887 platting of Willis that followed the arrival of the Wabash railroad; the surrounding area's land purchases date to 1825-1835, and the settlement takes its name from an early landholder, Willis Potter. According to the restaurant's own history page, the building has served over the decades as a coach stop, grainery, butcher shop, ice house, post office and general store on what became the village's main street.
A mid-1980s restoration brought in antiques, walnut cabinets and oak trim gathered from around southeastern Michigan and northwest Ohio to recreate the look of an old-fashioned general store. Bone Heads Bar B Que opened in the building in 2009 and has operated there since as a barbecue restaurant and bar, one of two Bone Heads locations along with a second restaurant in Saline.

Bone Heads describes "our resident ghost or ghosts" on its own website. Customers have reported seeing a woman in a white dress descend the stairs, and one customer said she saw a young girl's face beside her own reflection in the women's restroom mirror. Staff say the hanging bar lamps swing with no one near them, that lights switch on well after closing, and that they hear whispering or footsteps with no one there.
AnnArbor.com's Tom Perkins wrote in October 2010 that investigators with the Ghost Hunters of Southeast Michigan recorded unexplained whispers and photographed orbs and what they described as a transparent human figure inside the restaurant. Lead investigator LaChance said the group believed three ghosts were present and that staff and regulars had nicknamed the woman most often seen "Nellie," describing her as appearing to be in her 40s; her identity was not established. The owners said lights in the upstairs office switched on and off and doors opened and closed on their own, calling it more of a "Casper" type presence than anything threatening.
In a May 2026 report, 99.1 WFMK's John Robinson described the same two figures: an older woman with her hair in a bun seen upstairs, and a younger presence associated with the women's restroom. Robinson wrote that vases had been broken by unseen hands during a renovation, prompting the owners to speak aloud and reassure whatever was there that the business meant no harm.
