Est. 1892 · Named for Robert J. Breckinridge, founding faculty member and Kentucky public schools architect · 1908 third-floor fire documented in college history · Part of Centre College's 19th-century campus expansion
Breckinridge Hall was built in 1892 at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. The building was named for Robert J. Breckinridge, a Presbyterian minister from the prominent Breckinridge family of Danville, who was among the seminary's founding faculty members and played a significant role in establishing Kentucky's public school system.
On March 2, 1908, a fire broke out on the third floor of Breckinridge Hall, damaging the building and leaving a mark on its history that has carried into campus folklore. The building was repaired and has served continuously as a student dormitory since.
Centre College, founded in 1819, is one of Kentucky's oldest liberal arts colleges. Breckinridge Hall remains one of its historic residential buildings and continues to house students today.

Unexplained footstepsDoors and windows opening when lockedLights and electronics activating without causeUnknown face illustration appearing on a wall
The legend of Peter at Breckinridge Hall has been collected in student interviews at Centre College over multiple years and appears in a student digital archive project documenting campus hauntings. Peter's origins are unclear; accounts describe him as a presence rather than a fully documented historical figure.
Alumnus Eric Maloney, who later worked in Centre's admissions office, described unexplained experiences during a summer camp held in the building. Former student Margueritte Wheeler recounted her closet door opening without cause and what she interpreted as the sound of weight settling on her bed when no one was present. Wayne King, a long-time director of facilities at Centre, documented two students whose third-floor room repeatedly had its door and window found open after being locked, escalating over time to electronics activating on their own.
The most striking account involves a summer maintenance inspection when staff found a detailed illustration of a man's face covering an entire wall in one room. No one could identify the artist, and attempts to remove the image were unsuccessful. The illustration was attributed to Peter by those who had experienced the building's other anomalies. Kentucky Monthly has included Centre College hauntings in its coverage of statewide Kentucky ghost lore.
