Est. 600 · Pre-Columbian Civilization · Mississippian Culture · UNESCO World Heritage Site

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site represents one of the most significant archaeological complexes in North America. Located approximately 8 miles northeast of Collinsville, Illinois, the site preserves remains of Mississippian civilization that flourished between roughly 600-1400 CE. At its cultural zenith (approximately 1050-1150 CE), Cahokia covered nearly 1,600 acres with an estimated population of 10,000-20,000 inhabitants.

The site originally contained approximately 120 mounds distributed across six square miles. Approximately 40 were destroyed during the 19th and 20th centuries through urban development and agricultural activity. The surviving 80 mounds vary substantially in size and function. Monks Mound, the largest prehistoric earthwork in North America, covers over five hectares at its base and rises 30 meters (100 feet), requiring an estimated 300 million basketfuls of earth to construct.

Mound 72, designated the "Woodhenge" location, served ceremonial and astronomical functions. Excavations revealed elaborate burial contexts including remains of the settlement's elite populations alongside evidence of ritual activity.

The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, recognizing its global archaeological significance. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site operates as an interpretive museum and park, providing public access to the surviving mounds through paved walking trails and an elevated ramp to Monks Mound's summit.
