Est. 1850 · Adaptive Reuse of the Historic Athens Foundry · Birthplace of the UGA Arch · Industrial-Era Architectural Complex
The Hotel Abacus Athens occupies a cluster of historic buildings on East Dougherty Street, anchored by the structure that originally housed the Athens Foundry, the iron mill that produced the UGA Arch — the wrought-iron entry gate that is the symbol of the University of Georgia.
The hotel complex includes original 19th-century foundry buildings adaptively reused as guest rooms, restaurants, and event space. The property reopened in 2014 as Graduate Athens, part of the Graduate Hotels brand. It has since rebranded as Hotel Abacus Athens under new ownership; Explore Georgia and other state and tourism sites carry the new name with the parenthetical 'formerly Graduate Athens' to assist returning guests.
The hotel hosts live music events, weddings, and meetings, and is a popular Athens destination both for its hospitality program and for its connection to the city's industrial history.

Shadow-figure sightings on late-night shiftsPhone calls from empty rooms (Room 119)Lights toggling without explanation
According to the Red & Black student newspaper's 2021 piece 'Strange happenings at the Graduate Hotel in Athens' and the Visit Athens GA tourism office's haunted-Athens overview, hotel staff during the property's recent decade have repeatedly described shadow-figure sightings on late-night shifts, particularly along service corridors and on the back stairs.
Room 119 is consistently identified as the most active location. The front desk has reportedly received phone calls placed from Room 119 when housekeeping had confirmed the room was vacant. Lights in the room are described as turning off when staff arrive and on when they leave — or the reverse pattern — and ranking among the property's most frequently re-reported phenomena.
The Foundry complex's long industrial history, including its years producing the UGA Arch and assorted iron work for Confederate and Reconstruction-era Georgia, is sometimes invoked as a historical anchor for the hotel's reputation. Lore is single-property-staff-sourced rather than multi-investigator, and this listing is treated as needs-review on the strength of the witnessed evidence.
