Boulder was founded in 1858 during the Colorado Gold Rush, and its downtown Pearl Street corridor retains much of its 19th- and early-20th-century architecture. The Arnett-Fullen House, an 1877 Gothic Revival home, is a well-known local landmark sometimes called the 'gingerbread house' for its ornamentation. Hotel Boulderado opened in 1909 as the city's first luxury hotel. The Boulder Theater, built in 1906 and rebuilt in its current Art Deco form in 1936, remains an active performance venue.
