The tour's route material draws on documented regional history, including the Donner Party, whose members made a final camp near Truckee in the winter of 1846-47 after being trapped by early snows in the Sierra Nevada, resulting in the deaths of roughly half the party and reports of survival cannibalism. The Watson Cabin, built by early Tahoe City settler Robert Montgomery Watson, is documented as the oldest structure in Tahoe City.
