Jerome grew up around copper mining beginning in the 1870s and by the early 20th century had a reputation as a rough company town, with saloons, gambling halls, and a red-light district clustered on its steep hillside streets. The Jerome Grand Hotel building opened in 1927 as the United Verde Hospital, serving the mining company's workforce; it operated as a hospital for roughly three decades before closing and later reopening as a hotel in the 1990s. Spook Hall, a former garage and department store on Hull Avenue, is now used as an event and community space. The Haunted Hamburger restaurant occupies a building on Jerome's Main Street business district.
