Est. 1864 · Oldest Saloon in Chippewa Falls · Irish Immigrant Heritage · Chippewa Valley History
The building at 236 West River Street in Chippewa Falls was constructed in 1864 — during the Civil War, when Chippewa Falls was already an established lumber town along the Chippewa River. Its original function was as a livery and boarding house, serving travelers and workers moving through the valley.
In 1905, Irish immigrant James Sheeley and his wife Kate purchased the property and converted it into a saloon and residence. The family name stuck. Kate Sheeley died in the building in 1934, and her death became the event most frequently associated with the building's reported paranormal activity — though the property's owners and researchers have identified five deaths total on the premises over its history.
In 2014, a local newspaper documented that when a new owner attempted to paint over a foyer mural, the roses in the painting bled through primer repeatedly until he abandoned the effort. Staining the staircase revealed footprints that appeared overnight with no apparent source.
The current owner, Jes Jensen — who had operated the saloon for at least nine years as of 2023 — has spoken publicly about her experiences in the building, describing them in a local news feature as communicative rather than threatening. 'It's more of a, hey, don't forget we're here,' she said to WQOW in October 2023.
The building operates as a functioning pub and restaurant, serving pub fare Tuesday through Sunday.

The Sheeley House's paranormal reputation is unusually well-sourced for a regional bar — the current owner has discussed her experiences in local news, and historical accounts go back to at least 2014, when reported phenomena were documented during renovation work.
Owner Jes Jensen told WQOW in October 2023 that she heard a woman's voice say her name early in her tenure at the saloon. She also described hearing a male voice addressing her as 'honey.' She characterized the presences as communicative rather than hostile.
The staircase incident, documented during a renovation, involved footprints appearing overnight on freshly stained treads with no explanation offered. A foyer mural with roses resisted repeated primer coats, with the roses bleeding through each application until the effort was abandoned.
Other reported phenomena include deadbolts unlocking without cause followed by footsteps ascending stairs, bowls traveling through the kitchen without contact, and a piano playing without anyone near it. Temperature fluctuations — cold bursts and warm gusts in isolated areas — have been reported by both staff and visitors.
Local investigators and paranormal interest groups have treated the Sheeley House as a genuine research site within the Chippewa Valley. The building's five documented deaths over 160 years provide the historical scaffolding for these accounts, though the specific identities and circumstances of most of those deaths have not been published in available sources.
Kate Sheeley's 1934 death in the building is the most frequently named anchoring event. Whether her death and the reported phenomena are causally related remains, as with all such claims, unverifiable through available evidence.
