The Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, whose tribal lands encompass approximately 77,000 acres in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, developed casino gaming operations on their reservation beginning in the gaming expansion era of the early 1990s.
The site selected for the casino had previously served as a working farmstead. Rather than demolish the farmhouse, the structure was relocated approximately one mile down the road when construction began — an unusual preservation decision that left the original building standing, just in a different location.
The gaming facility operated for years as the LCO Casino Lodge & Convention Center before undergoing significant renovation and rebranding. On September 21, 2018, the Sevenwinds Casino, Lodge & Conference Center opened with 75 lodge rooms and expanded amenities including a heated indoor pool, sauna, and workout facility. The Lac Courte Oreilles tribal government continues to operate the property.

ApparitionsPhantom footsteps
The farmhouse that previously occupied the casino site had its own reputation before the building was moved. Workers and residents associated with the property reported eerie footsteps heard late at night — a straightforward auditory phenomenon that does not admit easy explanation but was noted consistently enough to become local knowledge.
When the casino was constructed and the farmhouse relocated, the reported activity shifted to the new structure. Employees working the late-night or early-morning graveyard shift have described seeing figures — apparitions of people in normal clothing — moving through the casino floor after the facility has closed for the evening. The figures reportedly appear in peripheral vision and vanish when approached.
Whether these accounts represent a continuation of whatever was experienced in the farmhouse, or a new phenomenon tied to the land itself, is not established. The Shadowlands Haunted Places Index documented the farmhouse activity and subsequent casino reports, though independent corroboration from named witnesses is limited.
