Calallen High School was established in 1928 in the rural community of Calallen, which had been founded eighteen years earlier in 1910. The town took its name from Calvin Joseph Allen, a prominent early rancher whose 4,000-acre cattle ranch formed the foundation of what would become the Calallen Independent School District. The first Calallen Schools diplomas were awarded in 1913, with Tom Bickham receiving the inaugural diploma from the district.
The high school was officially approved on August 28, 1928, by the County Board, initially authorized to serve three grade levels provided enrollment did not exceed sixty students. Over the decades, the school evolved from a small rural institution into a full-service secondary campus. In 1970, the town of Calallen was annexed by the City of Corpus Christi, shifting the school from a rural educational institution to an urban one. Today, Calallen High School serves grades 9-12 and remains part of the Calallen Independent School District.

The most compelling paranormal reports at Calallen High School center on the theater arts wing, specifically an elevator located near the Theater Arts room. According to documented local accounts, this elevator exhibits autonomous behavior during nighttime hours—opening and closing its doors without any physical input from building occupants. Students remaining on campus for extracurricular activities, such as theater rehearsals or sports practice, have independently witnessed this phenomenon on multiple occasions. Notably, mechanical engineers examining the equipment have found no mechanical fault to explain the irregular operation.
Staff members, particularly custodial personnel who perform evening maintenance rounds, report regular encounters with the phenomenon. Beyond the elevator phenomena, one janitor has provided detailed accounts of encountering a spectral form—described as a young teenage girl—roaming the hallways during late evening hours when all student activities have concluded and the building should be empty. The descriptions are consistent across multiple accounts, though the apparition's origin and historical context remain unclear.
These reports exist within the broader folklore tradition of Corpus Christi paranormal legends and have been circulated among local residents and students for years. The consistent documentation of the elevator's independent operation by multiple trained building engineers suggests either a persistent mechanical anomaly or a documented instance of residual or intelligent haunting phenomena that warrants further investigation.
