The Baker Hotel was constructed in 1927 in Colorado City, Texas as the Colorado Hotel, opening March 12, 1927 at a cost of $225,000. The 5-story, 85-room luxury hotel featured cutting-edge amenities including structural concrete frame, fireproof materials, high-speed elevators, an 800-seat theater, and a 40-car garage. The hotel operated under various names (Hotel Crawford 1930s-1950s) until Ed Baker purchased and renovated it in 1957-1958, renaming it the Baker Hotel. The hotel ceased operations in 1970 and has since deteriorated to a condemned ruin. A folkloric legend attributes the haunting to workers killed in an early 1900s fire, though this predates the 1927 construction and lacks historical documentation.

According to Brazoria County folklore, the basement of the Baker Hotel harbors the restless spirits of workers who died in a fire sometime in the early 1900s. The legend specifies that these employees lived in basement quarters and perished when the fire swept through the building. This narrative has become the foundational explanatory framework for the paranormal activity associated with the location.
However, this historical account cannot be verified through archival evidence, news records, or official documentation. The claimed fire does not appear in Colorado City records, and the building itself was not constructed until 1927—decades after the alleged incident. This chronological impossibility suggests the haunting story may be folklore rather than historical record, though the paranormal reputation persists.
Modern paranormal investigations have documented specific phenomena within the abandoned structure. Electronic Voice Phenomena recordings—EVP, a controversial but widely investigated paranormal indicator—have captured disembodied voices. Investigators report that the majority of these recordings feature what sounds like a young girl speaking. The source and identity of this voice remain unexplained.
Physical phenomena have also been reported. Chains at the gate entrance have been found rattled and displaced, with the gate standing open despite being secured multiple times during investigations. Shadow figures have been photographed on the third floor in configurations that could not be replicated in subsequent photos taken from the same angle, suggesting either genuinely anomalous photography or environmental factors that distorted the images in ways uncontrolled by the investigator.
The building's current state—a gutted, condemned structure—adds to its eerie reputation. The hollow shell invites projection of dark narratives and makes the environment psychologically unsettling for visitors who approach the exterior.
