Car stalling on the bridge at nightSounds of running and shoutingA woman crying for help and a baby crying

The Greenfield crybaby-bridge legend, set at the Ghormley Road bridge, combines the crybaby motif with an older 'witch hunt' frame. As the story goes, a woman the townspeople believed to be a witch was being chased toward the bridge while carrying her baby. Hurrying, she struck the side of the span and dropped the child into the creek below; the pursuing crowd then killed her, and the baby drowned.

According to the legend, a visitor who stops on the bridge at night may feel the car stall and hear the sounds of people running and shouting 'stop,' the mother crying out for help, and the wail of the baby, the tragedy seemingly replaying in the dark.

The story is independently documented by Haunted Hocking — the archives of folklorist and author Jannette Quackenbush, who has conducted original fieldwork and newspaper-based research on Ohio hauntings for more than 40 years. Quackenbush's dedicated Ghormley Road Bridge page records 'ghostly cries of a baby linger in the air around the bridge,' corroborating the tradition independent of Shadowlands. The legend is also indexed by the Ohio Crybaby Bridge Project at My Strange & Spooky World and noted in broader Wikipedia documentation of Ohio crybaby-bridge sites. No documentary evidence supports an actual historical event at this location; it is presented as living legend.
