Local tradition recorded by Weird NJ holds that the early-twentieth-century landowners named the lake after the white mist that frequently rises from its surface in cool morning air — a meteorologically routine phenomenon at small impoundments in wooded valleys. Within that mist, hikers and drivers along Shades of Death Road have reported seeing figures, both human and indistinct.

A secondary tradition, repeated in the original Shadowlands account, asserts that the lake was constructed over a Native American burial ground. According to Lenape historians consulted by Weird NJ, the area is part of the historical Lenape (Munsee) homeland, and pre-contact archaeological sites are documented in Warren County more broadly. However, no specific burial ground beneath the present Ghost Lake site has been authenticated in the public record. Visitors should treat this claim as folklore rather than verified history.

Other reports include the sound of running footsteps on the road shoulder at night, the smell of decay in still air, and figures seen briefly in headlights that are not there on a second pass.

Crawford Road Bridge

Cass City, MI

Crawford Road runs through a rural stretch of Tuscola County southeast of Cass City in Michigan's Thumb. The bridge that once carried the road over a small creek or drain near the Cass River has since been removed, leaving only a dirt road crossing roughly 100-200 feet south of Kelly Road. The location's notoriety comes entirely from a 19th-century folk legend rather than a documented historical event.
