Est. 1966 · Mackinac College (1966-1970) · Mackinac Island Tourism Heritage · Moral Re-Armament Mission History
The property at the eastern end of Mackinac Island has been in continuous institutional use since the nineteenth century, beginning as a Moral Re-Armament religious mission. In the early 1960s, the same organization produced films on the grounds, using the facility's theater for production work.
In 1966, the property was repurposed as Mackinac College, a four-year liberal arts institution. The college remained open long enough to graduate exactly one class before closing in 1970. It is during this brief period that the resort's most persistent figure originates.
A student identified only as Harvey — his full name withheld by his family — was reportedly abandoned by a girlfriend while enrolled at the college. In the late 1960s, despondent, he went to the bluffs behind the property and died. Accounts vary on the manner: some say he jumped, others that he shot himself. He was found at the base of the bluff.
The resort itself opened in 1972 and has operated seasonally — April through October — ever since. It received significant attention following a Ghost Hunters episode on Syfy that featured the property.

Harvey's reputation at Mission Point is unusual among documented campus ghosts: he is described as mischievous rather than tragic. While the circumstances of his death were severe — a young man's heartbreak that ended at the foot of a cliff — the phenomena attributed to him have a different register.
In the carpenter shop, workers returning to start shifts would find sawdust scattered that they had swept up the night before, as if no cleaning had occurred. Items moved to different positions. Small objects disappeared and reappeared.
The theater sees more dramatic activity. Staff and guests have reported being poked and pinched — physical sensations without visible source. These reports cluster around female guests, which has become part of the legend's texture. Harvey's behavior, as told at Mission Point, reads less like haunting and more like a presence that has become comfortable enough to be annoying.
A second category of reports describes soldiers visible in various locations around the property, likely residual from the building's use across multiple institutional eras. These accounts are less developed than the Harvey narrative.
The resort's official tour operators have incorporated Harvey into the island's ghost tour programming. Haunts of Mackinac's nightly lantern walk finishes at Mission Point, where Harvey's story is told on site.
