The ritual has been consistent across multiple independent accounts: shut the car off, roll down all windows, place your keys on the roof. Then wait. Those who have reported results describe hearing a splash from the direction of the river, followed by the appearance of a man standing in the road before their headlights.

A summer 2005 visit by a paranormal investigator produced a different phenomenon entirely. A perfectly round light appeared in the distance with no visible source. It moved briefly and disappeared. Attempts to reproduce it using car headlights failed to match what the investigator observed. On a return visit, a reader reported witnessing something moving on the water's surface that appeared to approach the vehicle. On a separate late-night visit, audible splashes were heard — beginning quietly, then apparently growing closer.

The investigator who documented these experiences expressed skepticism about the original legend's premise while acknowledging the unusual light remained unexplained. The two phenomena — the apparition from the drowning story and the mystery light — appear to be distinct reports that have accumulated around the same location over time.

Crawford Road Bridge

Cass City, MI

Crawford Road runs through a rural stretch of Tuscola County southeast of Cass City in Michigan's Thumb. The bridge that once carried the road over a small creek or drain near the Cass River has since been removed, leaving only a dirt road crossing roughly 100-200 feet south of Kelly Road. The location's notoriety comes entirely from a 19th-century folk legend rather than a documented historical event.

Denton Road Bridge

Canton, MI

Denton Road crosses the Lower Rouge River in Canton, in western Wayne County in the Detroit metro area. The original structure was a one-lane wooden bridge over the river on what was once an unpaved road. By the late 20th century it had become a magnet for ghost-hunters; the original bridge was replaced by the current concrete structure in 2003 when the road was reconfigured.

The road originated as a cow path in the nineteenth century and was later paved with two culvert crossings over small creeks. The legend associated with the road traces to the late 1800s and involves a woman identified in some accounts by the initials 'I.C.' — possibly Isabella Chartier — who reportedly disappeared with her young son during a winter night in 1893.
