Est. 1953 · Catholic Healthcare · Franciscan Sisters of the Poor · Closed Hospital
The Franciscan Sisters of the Poor founded Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital after repeated requests from Kentucky residents through the 1950s for a Catholic-run hospital and social service center. The facility was dedicated on July 14, 1953, opening with 92 beds and 40 bassinets.
The hospital expanded steadily over the following decades, eventually reaching 214 beds offering emergency, surgical, pediatric, and behavioral health services. In 2000 it was acquired by Bon Secours Health System of Baltimore. Between 2010 and 2013, the hospital ranked among the top five percent in the United States for patient experience scores.
Bon Secours Mercy Health announced in January 2020 that the hospital would close, citing financial pressures and consolidation in the regional healthcare market. The closure date was accelerated to April 30, 2020, due to staffing shortages. Approximately 1,000 jobs were affected. Many services were absorbed by King's Daughters Medical Center, now operating as UK King's Daughters.
The building was purchased and revitalized by Addiction Recovery Care, which opened the Bellefonte Hospital and Recovery Center in 2023. The original hospital chapel, designed for the Franciscan Sisters, is preserved on site.
Sources
The Shadowlands Haunted Places Index records the only widely-circulated legend attached to Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital: a Catholic nun named Fannie, said to be associated with the hospital's founding-era staff, has been reported in and around the original emergency room. The reports describe objects sliding off shelves, loud crashing sounds with no identifiable source, and occasional sightings of a habited figure.
No independent paranormal investigation, news article, or Franciscan Sisters of the Poor publication corroborates the account. The hospital's transition to a behavioral health facility means that the wing identified in the original folklore is no longer publicly accessible, and the new operator does not promote any haunted history.
For visitors interested in the site's atmosphere, the campus retains its original 1953 architecture and chapel, visible from public roadways near the Greenup County line.
