Former Mansion · Mishawaka Commercial History · Brewing Industry Oral Tradition
The Hacienda chain has operated in the Michiana region since the 1950s, and the Lincolnway West location in Mishawaka occupies a building with deeper roots in the city's industrial history. The structure has been characterized variously as a former mansion and as a property connected to Mishawaka's 19th-century brewing industry. An oral tradition among staff and local accounts holds that a young man fell to his death from a brewery tower that once stood on the property, though this event is not independently documented in surviving historical records.
The building passed through commercial use before the Hacienda chain took it over, retaining architectural features — original woodwork, multiple stories, and the general configuration of a converted residence — that distinguish it from a purpose-built restaurant. The Lincolnway corridor in Mishawaka was a commercial artery through much of the 20th century, and the building at 706 represents one of the older structures still in active use along the strip.
Staff accounts of unexplained activity predate the 2021 paranormal investigation. Multiple employees at the restaurant have reported lights turning on and off without cause, water fixtures activating independently, and kitchen and bar appliances behaving erratically when the building is otherwise empty or at closing time. These accounts were sufficiently consistent that the management permitted Michiana Paranormal Investigations to conduct a formal investigation of the premises in October 2021.

Michiana Paranormal Investigations visited the Hacienda on Lincolnway West in October 2021 and captured what they identified as an EVP — an electronic voice phenomenon — during the session. WSBT and WNDU both covered the investigation, and the captured recording was described by investigators as a distinct, unidentified voice with no apparent explanation.
Staff accounts document years of activity before and after the formal investigation. Lights in sections of the restaurant turn on and off without anyone near the switch. Water runs in empty bathrooms. Kitchen and bar equipment activates after close. The activity is reported to cluster in specific areas of the building rather than distributed evenly throughout, which investigators have noted as consistent with localized residual phenomena rather than a general environmental explanation.
The brewery tower death tradition — a young man reportedly falling from a tower on the property during the industrial era — circulates among staff as a possible explanation for the activity, though no newspaper record or death certificate has been located to confirm the specific event. Whether the activity originates with that story or with the building's longer history as a mansion and later commercial property, the Hacienda at 706 Lincolnway West carries one of the more thoroughly documented paranormal reputations among active dining establishments in the Michiana region.
