Home of ISU theatre and speech programs · Named on Idaho State University's list of reportedly haunted campus buildings
Frazier Hall sits on the Idaho State University campus in Pocatello and serves as the home of the university's theatre and speech programs, including its mainstage theater. As a working performance building, it sees regular use by students and faculty for productions, classes, and rehearsals.
The building's ghost story is unusual in that the university has acknowledged it publicly. In 2022, the Idaho State Journal published a feature, 'Haunted Halls,' in which ISU told stories of ghost sightings on campus, with Frazier Hall among the buildings named. The student newspaper, the ISU Bengal, has likewise covered the Frazier Hall reports in its annual Halloween-season pieces.
What sets Frazier apart from a typical campus rumor is the source of some accounts: ISU Public Safety officers have reported hearing footsteps and doors opening and closing on the fourth floor when they know the building is unoccupied. Custodians and students describe similar experiences. The reports cluster in the upper floor and the theater's audience seating, and they have made Frazier one of the more frequently cited haunted sites on the Pocatello campus.

The Frazier Hall ghost is known on campus as Alex. In the version Idaho State University relates, Alex was a boy, the son of a professor who often brought him along to work in the building. The story is folklore — there is no public death record tied to a named child — and the university presents it as part of campus lore rather than documented history.
The phenomena attributed to Alex are consistent across accounts. ISU Public Safety officers have reported footsteps and the sound of doors opening and closing on the fourth floor at times when they know the building is empty. Custodians say Alex plays tricks — opening windows, moving objects from one place to another. Students and visitors describe phantom piano music and the impression of a ghostly audience in the upper level of the theater seating.
A local paranormal group that investigated the building reported capturing electronic voice phenomena and seeing unexplained shadows. Because the reports come partly from university staff in the course of their work — rather than only from ghost-tour participants — Frazier Hall has held a steady place among the most-cited haunted buildings on the ISU campus.
