Est. 1896 · One of the oldest continuously operating spiritualist communities in California, founded 1896 · 130+ years of spiritualist religious practice, mediumship, and community gathering · Survived the 2014 Cocos wildfire and was restored with community support
Harmony Grove Spiritualist Association was formally incorporated in 1896 to advance the teaching of spiritualism as a religion, philosophy, and science. Founders Foster, Harding, and Molette established the community on 13 acres of oak-shaded land a few miles west of Escondido, creating one of Southern California's first and longest-surviving spiritualist communities.
For much of its early history, the Harmony Grove compound was home to a community of palm readers, psychic artists, and séance mediums who lived on the property. The surrounding area—particularly the Elfin Forest to the west—became intertwined with the spiritualist community's identity, drawing visitors from across the region for Sunday meetings and community events.
The community sustained significant damage in the 2014 Cocos wildfire, which destroyed several historic structures on the property. The association undertook a multi-year restoration effort, documented in regional media including The Coast News Group, and resumed full programming. As of 2026, the association operates monthly public Spiritual & Healing Arts Fairs and weekly Sunday services, along with certification programs for healers and mediums.
Note: The Shadowlands description referenced the location as 'an insane asylum,' which is historically inaccurate. Harmony Grove has always been a spiritualist religious community and was never a hospital or asylum of any kind.

The paranormal reputation of Harmony Grove is inseparable from its spiritualist identity. For over a century, residents and visitors have reported encounters that the community itself frames within spiritualist theology—contact with departed souls, spirit guides, and residual presences.
Corrinne Pleasant (1897–1984), a longtime spiritualist resident of Harmony Grove, described in personal accounts the spirit of an Englishman wearing an old stovepipe hat and carrying a swinging lantern who appeared to community members. She also recorded stories of other spiritualists attempting contact with Indigenous spirits believed to be associated with the land, reflecting the Kumeyaay and Diegueno peoples who inhabited the San Diego County foothills for thousands of years before European contact.
The broader 'Lady in White' tradition of the Elfin Forest—a spectral woman in flowing white—has been reported by multiple independent sources including regional paranormal investigators and longtime local residents. Some versions identify her as the spirit of a woman who met a tragic end in the forest; others connect her to the community's spiritualist practices. The 'White Witch' legend, documented on San Diego Ghosts and other regional paranormal resources, traces a variant of this apparition to Questhaven Retreat adjacent to the forest.
According to researchers at sdghosts.com, the Harmony Grove area has accumulated some of the most consistently reported paranormal accounts in North San Diego County, spanning the 19th through 21st centuries. The spiritualist community's own framework actively invites and contextualizes such reports as genuine spiritual phenomena rather than folklore.
