The building at 213 Forest Avenue in Pacific Grove has been a fixture in the town since 1902, making it among the city's oldest surviving commercial structures. Pacific Grove itself was founded in 1875 as a Methodist summer retreat and incorporated in 1889; its Victorian-era building stock reflects the settlement's church-camp origins and the subsequent arrival of permanent residents and small businesses.
Michael Canadas and David Robinson established the Carmel Doll Shop in 1989 in the village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, building a reputation for French fashion dolls and high-end antique collectibles. In 2009 they purchased the deteriorating Angwin Building in Pacific Grove with the intent of creating a permanent home for the collection. The two-year restoration involved full replacement of electrical and plumbing systems and installation of two fireplaces, while keeping the historic character of the facade and interiors intact. The Pacific Grove Heritage Society recognized the project with an Award of Excellence and Heritage House designation in 2014.
The owners have described the building as home to three distinct spirits — identified not by name but by recurring behavioral patterns — since they began occupying the space. The shop became publicly associated with paranormal activity when the Discovery+ series Ghost Adventures filmed a full episode there in 2022 (Season 25, Episode 9: 'Pacific Grove Nightmare'), drawing national attention to the building's reported activity.

Owners Michael Canadas and David Robinson have described three distinct presences in the building since their restoration work began in 2009 — identified by behavioral patterns rather than names or appearances. The most externally documented incidents involve alarm systems activating without cause and lights throughout the building switching on and off, including on at least one occasion in the presence of Pacific Grove police officers who were called to investigate.
Neighbors have reported hearing sounds from the shop after closing hours. A persistent complaint during and after renovation involved construction sounds — banging, scraping, footsteps — from the third-floor apartment, which has remained vacant. When investigators entered the unit, they described sensing an energy they were unprepared for.
The Ghost Adventures crew filmed Season 25 Episode 9 at the location in 2022, titled 'Pacific Grove Nightmare.' The episode documented equipment readings the crew described as indicating multiple presences, including figure-like anomalies on detection gear. The episode is rated 7.5 on IMDB. Canadas has been quoted as treating the activity with relative equanimity, noting the spirits' hijinks as inconvenient rather than threatening.
The specific identity or origin of the reported spirits has not been established. The Angwin Building's early history — who built it, what it was used for in its first decades — has not been formally documented in available historical records.
