Est. 1895 · Victorian Commercial Architecture · Saratoga Village Heritage
The Victorian structure at 14503 Big Basin Way was built in 1895, during the period when Saratoga was developing as a destination for San Jose's growing prosperous class. The building served as the home of the Saratoga News for a period before transitioning to restaurant use. The previous Italian tenant was Bella Mia, which relocated to downtown San Jose.
Bella Saratoga opened in the building in 1993 and has operated continuously since. The two-story Victorian features the original architectural character of the 1890s structure — wooden floors, narrow staircases, and rooms with distinct identities that work naturally as separate dining areas. The Saratoga Village context places it among antique shops and boutiques along Big Basin Way, a commercial strip that retains much of its late-19th-century scale.
The restaurant has earned consistent recognition for its Northern Italian menu and wine list, drawing clientele from across the South Bay and Silicon Valley.

The building's paranormal reputation predates the current restaurant. Former owners described security alarms activating without cause on a recurring basis — an anomaly notable because responding police officers, arriving to investigate, experienced the same events themselves rather than finding an empty building with a faulty sensor.
Pictures have reportedly jumped off walls in multiple locations throughout the building. Staff accounts describe footsteps on the back staircase heard after closing, when the building has been checked and locked. The sounds are described as deliberate — footsteps rather than structural settling.
In the restroom, the water faucet has reportedly turned on independently. Several accounts specify that witnesses observed the handle physically move without being touched. A ball of fire described as moving through the dining area has been reported, though accounts of this are fewer and less consistent than the staircase and water accounts.
An apparition of an elderly woman has been reported, most often described as appearing briefly and then vanishing. Cold spots have been noted in various areas without a consistent location.
The building's history — newspaper office, multiple restaurants across more than 130 years — provides little in the way of specific tragedy to anchor the reports. The accounts remain atmospheric rather than attached to any documented historical event.
