The Oliver House sits in the historic Brewery Gulch district of Bisbee, Arizona, and was constructed beginning in 1909 by Edith Ann Oliver and her husband Henry Oliver. Henry was a mining executive connected with the Calumet & Arizona Mining Company, one of the dominant copper-mining concerns in southern Arizona during the early 20th century, and the building was developed as a residence and workspace for that company's executives.
Bisbee in this era was a fast-growing copper town with a transient population of miners, executives, and laborers. The Oliver House's documented incidents fit that broader pattern. In February 1920 Nathaniel 'Nat' Anderson, a miner who occupied Room 13, was shot twice and killed at the top of the stairs near his room. Anderson had been involved with a married woman whose husband he reportedly owed money. A separate widely reported incident in 1932 involved a man who, after discovering his spouse with another partner inside the building, shot several people on the property before turning the firearm on himself.
The building changed hands several times across the 20th century. In 1986 Dennis Schranz purchased the property and converted it into a full bed and breakfast, and it has operated as a historic inn since. The Oliver House appeared in a 2012 episode of the Travel Channel's 'Ghost Adventures' series, paired with Bisbee's nearby Copper Queen Hotel.
