Est. 1909 · First three-story building in Mohave County, Arizona · Tallest building between Albuquerque and San Bernardino at completion · Contributing structure in Kingman Commercial Historic District, NRHP #86001153 · Frequented by Andy Devine and Clark Gable · Largest commercial native tufa stone building in Kingman
Construction on the Brunswick Hotel began in the summer of 1907 under the direction of John Mulligan and John W. 'Watt' Thompson, two prominent Kingman businessmen who set out to build a landmark worthy of their growing desert town. Using tufa stone quarried directly from the Kingman area, they raised what would become the first three-story building in Mohave County and the tallest building between Albuquerque and San Bernardino upon its completion in the winter of 1909.
The hotel quickly earned a reputation for refinement unusual in frontier Arizona. Amenities included Waterford crystal stemware, solid brass beds in all 50 rooms, private telephones, hot water heaters, and electric baths — luxuries that made the Brunswick a destination for travelers and dignitaries alike. Among the hotel's notable guests were actor and local favorite Andy Devine, who grew up in Kingman, and Clark Gable, who frequented the property after his 1939 marriage to Carole Lombard in nearby Kingman.
In 1912, a falling-out between Mulligan and Thompson — reportedly over a woman — led to the literal division of the building. A wall was constructed down the middle, creating two separate establishments: one retaining the lobby and bar, the other the restaurant and hotel rooms. This split persisted for nearly fifty years before the dividing walls were removed in the 1960s, reuniting the building.
The Brunswick was designated a contributing structure in the Kingman Commercial Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 14, 1986 (NRHP #86001153). After a period of vacancy in the late 20th century, the building was reopened and has since been renovated to house Garibaldi's Italian Restaurant on the first floor, an art gallery, and Airbnb studio apartments on the upper floors.

The Brunswick Hotel has accumulated a paranormal reputation stretching back many years, with accounts documented by multiple independent observers. The most commonly reported entity is the ghost of a young girl, described as playing and wandering the premises. According to a 2008 paranormal investigation documented by the Holistic Psychic research group, a psychic investigator made contact with what she described as an intelligent haunting — an interactive rather than residual presence — of a child who reportedly lived at the hotel and died after falling from a stairway landing. The hotel manager at the time confirmed that the girl's spirit is the entity most often reported by guests and staff.
Beyond the child apparition, independent paranormal sources including the Allstays Haunted Travel Guide document widespread sightings of shadow figures throughout the hotel, particularly along the second-floor hallways. Witnesses describe figures that walk through walls or pass directly through standing guests, though the overall tone of reports characterizes the presences as harmless. The kitchen and basement areas are also frequently cited as centers of unexplained activity.
The Brunswick's history as a hotel that served travelers, a divided establishment with a turbulent partnership history, and — according to some accounts — a period use as a brothel, may have contributed to the layered spiritual energy that visitors consistently describe. A paranormal documentary team ('Dead Whisper 2') conducted an investigation on site, though the session was compromised by restaurant noise during operating hours.
